Description: The Robokind Foundation, based in Hanover, is committed to making robotics and artificial intelligence accessible to everyone and providing further education in these fields. Currently, the Robokind Foundation team is working on the funded KIRIA project, which trains employees from companies in Lower Saxony through a free 20-hour program and allows them to test artificial intelligence in conjunction with robotics in practical, real-world business settings—for example, by using machine vision in quality assurance.

Through the KIRIA project, SMEs can gain hands-on experience with artificial intelligence in manufacturing at no cost. In addition to workshops and online sessions, the project also includes on-site trials at partner companies.

Starting in late 2025, the Robokind Foundation will open its AI lab once a month to demonstrate real-world industrial applications and offer interested parties the opportunity to try out AI and robotics for themselves.

As the consortium leader, the Bildungswerk der Niedersächsischen Wirtschaft (BNW) is responsible for the management, coordination, and content direction of the project across all four federal states (Lower Saxony, Hamburg, Bremen, and Schleswig-Holstein). As an active driver of digital transformation, the BNW serves as the point of contact for companies regarding issues related to education and digitalization.

Description: Sightwise GmbH develops and markets innovative solutions for AI-based image processing in the context of visual quality assurance for manufacturing companies. The focus is on the detection of surface defects, such as those found on metal components in the automotive or aerospace industries. By generating synthetic (artificial) training data based on 3D geometry, the limitations of conventional AI approaches—such as a lack of data diversity and quality—can be overcome. The Sightwise AI pipeline generates a customized dataset for each use case, thereby optimizing model performance specifically for each customer. The result is software for analyzing 2D image data that is used in production—for example, in-line or during final inspection—to check the surface quality of products and components.

This gives customers the opportunity to automate a range of inspection tasks that were previously performed manually. Conventional approaches to 2D image processing have failed, particularly in cases of high component variability, rare types of defects, or dynamic lighting conditions. Unlike many providers of conventional (AI) image processing, Sightwise GmbH focuses precisely on these complex, previously unsolved inspection tasks, thereby offering its customers a two-pronged path to “Return on Investment (ROI)” —on the one hand, through the automation and standardization of previously manual processes, and on the other hand, through the first-ever systematic collection of image data and inspection results, which are then made available downstream for comprehensive process analyses. Depending on the product and industry, these analyses can then be used, for example, for production process improvements, predictive quality, or in the context of traceability.
