High-tech from the region for the medicine of tomorrow

Demographic change does not stop at clinical laboratories: increasing sample numbers are met with a shortage of skilled workers, rising personnel costs, and ever-higher demands on quality and speed. This is exactly where LabMatic Automation GmbH comes in. Founded in Wunstorf in 2024, the medical technology company develops highly specialized, scalable laboratory automation solutions that relieve the burden on medical professionals while accelerating diagnostic processes.

What is now in demand internationally began with a clear idea – and targeted support from the Hannover Region Economic Development Agency.

From idea to funding: Enabling targeted digital innovation

In order to successfully transfer its many years of automation experience from the automotive sector to clinical applications, LabMatic faced a key challenge: the further development of a complex prototype system that meets high medical requirements and is also modular, scalable, and space-saving.

The Hannover Region Business Service provided LabMatic with comprehensive support – from selecting the appropriate funding program to reviewing and revising the draft application. In close cooperation with consultant Dr. Jöran Wrana and the AI network KI.WI of the Hannover economic region, the company succeeded in obtaining a grant of €50,000 from the highly sought-after "Digitalbonus.Niedersachsen Innovativ" program.

The funding has enabled targeted investments in AI hardware and software as well as the digitization of key development processes.

Short distances, big impact

Particularly valuable for LabMatic: the pragmatic, solution-oriented cooperation with the Hannover region. Short communication channels, open discussions, and a deep understanding of business requirements ensured that a funding idea quickly turned into a concrete development step.

With the funds from the Digital Bonus, sample laboratory automation at the Wunstorf site was taken to the next level – including the addition of new device integrations and the further development of the system control to Release 6.5. A decisive milestone on the road to market readiness.

"Our laboratory automation systems are expressly not intended to streamline the workforce in clinical laboratories. On the contrary: in times of demographic change and an increasing reluctance to work stressful night, holiday, and weekend shifts, our solutions enable autonomous or semi-autonomous work. Laboratory automation offers concrete opportunities to relieve employees of routine tasks and, at the same time, qualify them for more demanding laboratory tasks. This preserves valuable technical expertise within the system.

In addition, our autonomous laboratory automation solutions take over tasks from employees of the 'boomer generation' who will be retiring from working life in the coming years due to their age. Overall, our laboratory automation solutions thus make a significant contribution to ensuring diagnostic care as the basis of all medical treatment—even with reduced staffing levels and an expected demographic increase in sample volume.

International breakthrough: order from the British NHS

A look ahead to 2026 shows that these investments have paid off: LabMatic Automation receives a major international order from the British National Health Service (NHS) for the Women's Hospital Liverpool. The order includes the design, construction, delivery, and implementation of a comprehensive laboratory automation solution – individually tailored to the requirements of the hospital's clinical laboratory.

This order is clear proof of the technological capabilities of the solutions. The order strengthens LabMatic's position in the European healthcare market and creates a solid basis for further growth.
