IN-Training – Achieving Training Success Through Vocational and Language Learning

A pilot project aimed at strengthening mandatory and reliable language support for apprentices with a migrant background in the dual vocational training system in the Hanover region.

Explanatory Video: IN-Ausbildung Pilot Project

The Hannover region, in coordination with the Hannover Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) and the Hannover Chamber of Crafts (HWK), has developed a pilot project to work with the Lower Saxony Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs to establish targeted language support in vocational training. Four vocational schools in the Hannover region are participating in this innovation project funded by the Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs (see below).

The goal of the pilot project is to ensure the successful dual vocational training of (newly) immigrated apprentices through integrated language support and language instruction.
For this reason, the “company language day” was incorporated into the project in addition to regular vocational school classes. The companies provide this day as an additional language learning day so that language acquisition can take place within the familiar organizational framework of the vocational school. This additional “Company Language Day” is organized through the integration of BAMF vocational language courses, which are conducted by educational providers at the vocational school’s location.
In addition, language instruction can take place on another day, for example as tandem instruction in a team-teaching format with a vocational school teacher. This ensures that trainees receive support precisely where language and subject-specific learning intersect.

A key prerequisite for successfully completing vocational training is therefore the close integration of language support and language training measures among the training company, the vocational school, and the supporting institutions (chambers of commerce, BAMF, school authorities). Other key success factors include the coordination of courses by the local government, a clear stance and communication from the chambers toward the companies, and the organizational integration of vocational language courses into the vocational school.
