There is an acute shortage of skilled workers in Germany. Numerous training positions remain unfilled, particularly in skilled trades and technical professions. At the same time, young people are facing uncertainties as they transition into working life: How will crises such as climate change, inflation and geopolitical tensions restrict their careers? At the career orientation format "SHIFT NOW - Your Future Festival" on September 2, 2025 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., young people between the ages of 16 and 21 from all over Lower Saxony can discuss their individual questions, concerns and ideas for their future free of charge.

The project is organized and significantly supported by kreHtiv Netzwerk Hannover e.V: The Lower Saxony Ministry for the Environment, Energy and Climate Protection is funding SHIFT NOW with 325,000 euros, while the Hannover Region , as the idea provider and initiator, is contributing a further 135,000 euros. This support makes it possible for young people and up to 40 training companies in Lower Saxony to participate free of charge.

Strengthening self-efficacy and discovering the world of work

SHIFT NOW focuses on interactive formats instead of traditional trade fair stands. The program includes a variety of workshops, lectures and dialogue-oriented offers, ranging from the creation of a personal values compass to upcycling and creative vision board workshops. The aim is to invite young people to take an in-depth look at their individual questions, concerns and ideas for their future.

In addition to exploring their own strengths and interests, the festival offers practical insights into a wide range of training occupations. At interactive stations, in practical vocational workshops, at the Pupils' Future Summit and in the Trainee Social Club, participants can engage in informal discussions with trainees, specialists and trainers.

Among other things, we are looking forward to exciting and practical insights into manual and technical professions, such as plant mechanic, IT specialist and event technology specialist. Numerous social and pedagogical training professions and training companies from all over Lower Saxony can be found in the "With Heart" category. The "Game Changers" present unusual or particularly "green" training occupations - from biodynamic vegetable farmer to environmental technician. Commercial and organization-intensive professions can be found among the "Orgaqueens & -kings", such as administrative clerks, bank clerks or office communication clerks.

Regionspräsident Steffen Krach und Minister Christian Meyer am Solarpanel.

"Securing skilled workers is a major challenge at the moment. Projects like SHIFT NOW, which rethink career guidance and meet young people at eye level, are invaluable. The region of
Hannover Region has played a leading role in developing this festival right from the start, because we are convinced that together we can set the course for a successful professional future for our young people."
Steffen Krach, President of the Hannover Region
"We want to be climate-neutral in Lower Saxony by 2040 in order to combat climate change. This will create many new jobs in renewable energies, energy technology, hydrogen, climate protection, the skilled trades, transformation, electromobility, battery and storage technology and in flood and nature conservation. Especially in times of global challenges, it is important to offer young people guidance and prospects. With SHIFT NOW, we are creating a format that not only provides information about professions with a future, but also encourages young people to discover their own strengths and interests and actively contribute to their future."
Christian Meyer, Lower Saxony's Minister for the Environment, Energy and Climate Protection
