The Hannover Regionhadover 525,000employeessubject to social security contributions in mid-2021. "The coronavirus pandemic has only slowed growth, but not stopped it," emphasizes Region President Steffen Krach: "With more than 533,000 people now employed across the entire region, the upward trend will continue in 2022." This means that the number of people in employment subject to social security contributions has grown by around 80,000 in the last ten years: more than 50,000 companies and businesses ensure economic dynamism in the region. However, a closer look at the details also reveals crisis-related changes: while the hospitality industry (minus 6.6%) and the manufacturing industry (minus 4%) will continue to see a further decline in employment figures in 2021, the transport and warehousing sector will continue to grow significantly by 6.7%. There is cause for relief in other economic services (now up 5.4% after a decline of 6.5% from 2019 to 2020). "With a view to the knowledge society and increasing digitalization, we are certainly well positioned in the region," sums up Ulf-Birger Franz, Head of Economic Affairs. "Especially as our manufacturing industry in the automotive sector is currently developing in the direction of electromobility."
There are also positive signals from the labor market:after thesharp rise in unemployment at the beginning of the first coronavirus wave, the labor market has subsequently adapted to the pandemic. "Unemployment in the region was around 44,400 people in June 2022, almost 5,500 fewer than in June 2020," reports Alexander Skubowius, Head of Economic and Employment Promotion at the Hannover Region. This also applies to youth unemployment: "After the worrying peak in mid-2020 with almost 5,000 unemployed young people, 3,620 young people are currently still unemployed." In absolute figures, however, the low level before the pandemic has not yet been reached again. However, the proportion of young unemployed people aged between 15 and under 25 in the total number of unemployed fell to 7.5% in mid-2022, a good percentage point below the figure in mid-2019. The Hannover Region has therefore continued the program to combat youth unemployment and supplemented it with a campaign for training.
The Hannover Region can further consolidate its position as an excellentlocation fortrainingand study interms of student numbers and vocational school pupils. Around 90,000 young people completed a course of study or training in the Hannover Region in 2021/2022. In the same period, around 38,000 young people alone completed their training at regional companies and at vocational schools inpublic and private sponsorship. The science and research location is represented by nationally renowned institutions such as Leibniz University, the Medical University and the University of Veterinary Medicine. Hannover University of Applied Sciences and Arts and the University of Music, Drama and Media also offer excellent and highly regarded teaching and training. Around 51,000 students were enrolledat the universities in Hanover in the 2021/2022 winter semester. "In terms of population, the Hannover Region continues to be one of the most important regions in Germany with the most young people in education," says Ulf-Birger Franz. "This makes it all the more important to utilize this potential and attract even more graduates to our companies in the region in order to meet the general demand for skilled workers in the Hannover Region. We are working on this in numerous economic and employment promotion projects."
Tourismin the Hannover Region has made a new start: In the first three quarters of 2022, the number of overnight stays increased significantly: By the end of September, there had already been around 2.67 million overnight stays - that's 500,000 more than in the whole of 2021. With the cancellation of the major trade fairs due to the pandemic restrictions, the number of overnight stays had plummeted: While there were still 4.25 million overnight stays per year in the city and surrounding area in 2019, the figures fell to around 2.1 million overnight stays in 2020 and 2.2 million in 2021. Looking ahead to 2022 as a whole, between 3 and 3.5 million overnight stays are expected.
