When sustainability empowers: How running shirts are creating new perspectives

February 16, 2026– With the help of the Hannover Region's Soziovation funding program, "RE:Shirt – Saving resources. Empowering people." combines sustainability with active social participation at the Hannover day center of Paritätische Suchthilfe Niedersachsen (Parity Addiction Support Lower Saxony).

What happens to textiles that are no longer needed? The project "RE:Shirt – Saving resources. Empowering people." provides a simple yet effective answer: they become a starting point for creativity, participation, and new self-efficacy. At the Hanover day center of Paritätische Suchthilfe Niedersachsen gGmbH, participants have designed new upcycled products from around 300 unused running shirts with the support of the Hanover Region Fund for Social-Ecological Innovation – and in doing so have created much more than just new items.

"Normally, it would not have been possible to implement the project. It was only possible with the funding. "
Alexandra Weber, Alextravagant UG, supervising fashion designer in the "RE:Shirt" project

Sustainability meets social participation

Several hundred running shirts were produced in 2020 for a charity run on the topic of addiction support. However, the run had to be canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, leaving the shirts unused in the basement of Paritätische Suchthilfe Niedersachsen. These unworn running shirts formed the starting point for the idea behind the project "RE:Shirt – Saving resources. Empowering people," which aimed to give them a new purpose.

The project combines two key issues for the future: ecological responsibility and social participation. Instead of disposing of unused textiles, they were creatively reworked. At the same time, people with experience of addiction and/or mental illness were given a safe space to get involved, try new things, and discover their own abilities. Resource conservation thus becomes not only visible, but also tangible.

The project focuses on people. The participants at the Hannover day center have gradually developed upcycling and design skills, made their own decisions, and seen how ideas turned into concrete products. This creative process has strengthened their confidence in their own abilities and made self-efficacy immediately tangible—an important building block for participation and personal development.

Support that enables impact

The project was made possible by funding and support from the Hannover Region Fund for Social-Ecological Innovation, implemented in cooperation with the kreHtiv Netzwerk Hannover. The collaboration provided not only financial support but also expert guidance to meaningfully combine ecological goals, social impact, and entrepreneurial action.

"RE :Shirt impressively demonstrates how creative processes can empower people. Through the project, many of our participants discover skills within themselves that had long been hidden—and experience that they can create something valuable. This experience has an impact far beyond the course. "
Olga Kumann-Eisen, facility manager at the Hannover day center, Paritätische Suchthilfe Niedersachsen gGmbH

Soziovation: Funding that makes projects like RE:Shirt possible

The project "RE:Shirt – Saving resources. Empowering people." is an example of how the Hannover Region's Fund for Social-Ecological Innovation (Soziovation) puts new ideas into practice. The funding program supports non-profit organizations, founders, and start-ups that combine ecological sustainability with social impact. With the help of the funding, the "RE:Shirt" project was able to finance investment and material costs as well as accompanying consulting services, thus creating a creative space for participation, competence development, and self-efficacy.

The Soziovation funding program is based on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of Agenda 2030 and places particular emphasis on innovative business models in the social economy and projects that open up employment prospects for disadvantaged target groups.

"The funded project is a prime example of how the Fund for Social-Ecological Innovation (Soziovation) combines sustainability and creativity with employment promotion. In this way, we support start-up projects and create more opportunities for participation at the same time. "
Dr. Oliver Brandt, Team Leader for Employment Promotion, Hanover Region

Visible results that last

A special milestone was reached with the exhibition of the resulting products on February 4, 2026. The results of the joint work were made visible to the public and appreciated. What's more, the "RE:Shirts" live on: as personal mementos, as gifts, as trophies at a volleyball tournament, or, in the future, as reprints for teams.

The "RE:Shirt" project by Paritätische Suchthilfe Niedersachsen impressively demonstrates how sustainable ideas can have an impact in everyday life – by saving resources and empowering people at the same time.
