November of Science: Hanover's universities and research institutions open their doors again

The program for this year's Science Festival was presented at today's press conference (27 October). All 120 events are compiled online at www.hannover.de/knowember. A program overview and sorting by topic will help you find your way through the wide range of events. The "Night that creates knowledge" on November 4 and the open days will once again entice science fans with numerous offers.
Hanover's Lord Mayor Belit Onay thanked the 65 research and educational institutions participating in the traditional knowledge format of the Initiative Wissenschaft Hannover: "Hannover's scientists and students have once again put together an exciting program. It gives an insight into the work at Hannover as an excellent research location and makes you want to start studying here. A remarkably high number of events at #knowember revolve around the topics of the environment, energy and sustainability. Research in Hannover makes an important contribution to solving social problems."
To kick off the "November of Science 2023", researchers from Hanover's universities and scientific institutions will be showing what influences our behavior and how we can change it for the better in entertaining interviews, lectures and hands-on activities. On November 1 from 6 p.m., current questions will be posed and discussed in the Xplanatorium at Herrenhausen Palace: To what extent do genes determine our behavior? Is
Citizen participation the engine for change? Can fashion contribute to climate protection?
Many participants, such as Hannover Medical School (MHH), the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover Foundation, Hannover University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HsH) and Hannover University of Music, Drama and Media (HMTMH), will be able to offer open days for the first time after a five-year break due to the coronavirus pandemic.
On November 8 from 3 to 7 pm, the library at the HMTMH Research Center for Music and Gender will be transformed into an escape room. Detectives aged 14 and over are invited to solve all the puzzles in 30 minutes, decipher all the letters, books and sheet music and uncover the identity of the musician they are looking for. You can register alone or as a group of up to five people until November 7.
The aufhof has been added as a new additional location for science communication. In addition to events and workshops on science and technology, the innovercity space also offers a wide range of advice on studying, BAföG and starting a career. More than 50 events are suitable for school pupils and are bundled at www.hannover.de/knowember. One of these is a 30-minute keynote lecture entitled "Enmity plus: The love-hate relationship between arch-rivals", which will take place on November 2 - three days before the derby match between Hanover and Braunschweig - at 6 pm at aufhof. Johannes Behrendt, Professor of Business and Communication at the HsH, will take an entertaining look at the rivalry in soccer from a scientific perspective. He will also explain why the arch-rival is so important for one's own identity and what characterizes the love-hate relationship between arch-rivals. This will be followed by a panel discussion with Marco Dehne (ex-professional for Hannover and Braunschweig) and Heiko Rehberg (ex-press spokesman for Hannover 96).
Another highlight awaits at Hanover Zoo: On the weekends (4.15.11, 11./12.11 and 18./19.11), young and old researchers can take a close look at nature from 1.30 to 3.30 pm. Participants can playfully approach the scientific research work of the zoo in the Adventure Zoo's research room: Which droppings belong to which animal? And what can we learn about the different animal species? How does behavioral research work? How can researchers at the zoo contribute to the protection of animals in their original habitats? The event is free of charge plus regular zoo admission.
From November 1 to 10, the Textile Workshop of the City of Hanover (LHH) is presenting an interactive exhibition of recycled textiles from the city in the Bürgersaal of the New Town Hall. Under the title "Hall of the Senses", the entire historic room will be clothed in a massive carpet made from textile waste and transformed into an atmospheric cathedral by an immersive sound installation. The LHH textile workshop and artist Gwen Wieczorek have sewn together vast quantities of waste materials to create artistic surfaces over the past few months of collaborative work. Viewers are invited to comprehend the shocking masses of discarded qualities. After all, 80 percent of discarded textiles worldwide are landfilled or incinerated. Only 20 percent is actually reused or recycled.
November of Science is a project of the Initiative Wissenschaft Hannover, in which all of Hannover's universities, the Fraunhofer ITEM, the Leibniz Institute for Applied Geophysics (LIAG), the Volkswagen Foundation, the Hannover Student Union and hannoverimpuls GmbH are involved alongside the state capital of Hannover. The format has been held every two years since 2008 and was postponed by one year in 2020 due to the pandemic. November of Science 2023 is sponsored by Sparkasse Hannover and VGH Versicherungen.
