Regional President Steffen Krach, Head of Economic Affairs Ulf-Birger Franz and members of the Hannover Region's Committee for Economic Affairs and Employment are spending three days at the leading trade fair EXPO REAL in Munich from October 4 to 6. In the run-up to the trade fair, on Tuesday, the delegation met with the district of Munich and District Administrator Christoph Göbel to exchange ideas, and at the subsequent exhibitor evening, a networking meeting with all exhibitors participating in the Hannover stand was on the agenda. The leading international trade fair for real estate and investment, which recently attracted around 40,000 trade visitors from 73 countries, starts on Wednesday. Contact persons from local authorities, the real estate industry, business development agencies and science will be represented at the Hannover Region's joint stand.

"The real estate industry is in crisis mode. You can feel that very clearly in the discussions. We have to stay on the ball together when it comes to creating housing or developing commercial and industrial space. But the willingness to exchange ideas and work together is high."

In addition to the real estate market report, the revitalization of brownfield sites is a focus of discussions with project developers, investors and research institutes: Space is becoming increasingly scarce, and space-intensive logistics and industrial operations in particular are increasingly taking place on previously used commercial and industrial sites."Brownfield sites offer great opportunities for urban and regional development andare becoming much more importantfor large-scalelogistics and industrial operations," says Ulf-Birger Franz, Head of the Department of Economic Affairs. "Against the backdrop of a shortage of space and with a view to sustainability, brownfield sites represent a clear development opportunity."The reactivation of brownfield sites offersnew opportunities for urban and regional development without having to take up "new" land, in the view of the Head of Economic Affairs, but often requires intensive partnership-based cooperation.

The last day in Munich is dedicated to a topic at the interface between real estate development and the economic development of the location: With the Munich Urban Colab, a joint initiative of the City of Munich and the UnternehmerTUM start-up center of the Technical University of Munich, an internationally unique location for smart city solutions is being created in Munich: Start-ups and established companies, creatives and scientists from various industries and disciplines can experiment and network here. Innovative concepts for the city of the future are developed here on over 11,000 square meters of usable space - and are also implemented in the fully equipped "MakerSpace". Start-ups, companies and creative minds from all sectors and disciplines are tackling specific topics such as construction, sustainability and mobility through programs and initiatives from UnternehmerTUM, LHM and the Technical University of Munich.

"Lighthouse projects such as the Munich Urban Colab are inspiring examples of the successful development of holistic innovation and technology locations. We should not hide when it comes to implementing similar projects at the Mechanical Engineering Campus in Garbsen. We have the potential, both in terms of space and real estate, as well as in regional science and business."
Ulf-Birger Franz, Head of Economic Affairs
