All global tire manufacturers have ambitious targets for the minimum use of sustainable raw materials in their products.
As reinforcing fillers account for around a quarter of the weight of tires, developments in this material class are an important component in achieving these goals.
The presentation highlights the production of carbon black from pyrolysis oil, which in turn is obtained from used tires. This circular process can be used to produce high-quality reinforcing fillers, which are currently the only practicable alternative to conventional fossil fillers in most rubber applications.
Dr. H. Westenberg, Orion Engineered Carbon GmbH
Hauke Westenberg has been working in the innovation team for the carbon black manufacturer Orion S.A. since 2016. At the largest research site in Cologne, he develops new filler systems for demanding elastomer applications such as tires, tubes, profiles and seals.
The focus here is on reinforcing fillers from sustainable production, improving the service life of rubber articles and reducing energy losses during use.
Before that, he worked for the Hanover-based automotive supplier Continental for over five years, first as a material developer for turbocharger and industrial hoses and then as a team leader for the development of hoses in charge air ducts. He completed his doctorate in chemistry on frustrated Lewis pairs at the University of Münster and the VU Amsterdam.

The event takes place under the umbrella of the transformation networkneu/wagen.
