Since 2009, the Hannover Region Employment Promotion Agency has been working with other partners to support the "Girls* and Technology" (M*uT) project, which gets schoolgirls interested in the fascinating and future-oriented STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). It has become increasingly successful from year to year, with a steadily growing number of female participants. - In 2024, 180 schoolgirls were already allowed to take part, and this year, due to the enormous demand, the congress will be open to up to 250 participants for the first time on November 17, 2025!

The goals and what makes M*uT special

"Girls* and Technology" pursues clear, important goals:

  • Reduction of gender-stereotypical career choices : Female students should be given the opportunity to discover new occupational fields without prejudice and external pressure.
  • Highlighting the excellent career opportunities : The STEM fields offer a wide range of future prospects that need to be showcased.
  • Direct contact with the university : Schoolgirls find out first-hand which paths they can take - be it through studies or training.

What makes M*uT special is the active project work . Instead of just listening, the participants can touch, try out and participate themselves. They immerse themselves in practice and experience STEM in a way that opens new doors and breaks down inhibitions. Equipped with the latest technical equipment and accompanied by STEM role models who act as role models and contact persons, the schoolgirls experience first-hand how fascinating and accessible the world of technology and science is.

Each group works intensively on a project from a STEM field and receives personal support. The projects are mainly organized by the institutes based at the university, but companies such as Sennheiser and Siemens (in 2024) also provide the students with exciting insights into STEM professions. The groups are deliberately kept small to give every single schoolgirl the opportunity to actively participate and ask questions.

In addition to working in small project groups, other events will take place on the day, such as the STEM interview, in which the students can ask questions to more experienced female students or professionals in the STEM field, as well as various competitions to further increase the fun factor on the day.

"There are very exciting things to do here. From computers to robots and everything. I really like it and it's also very exciting. The people here are also very nice. I have no criticism! I would love to study - maybe become a lawyer. But when I look at what I'm doing here now, maybe I like it more!"

The project as a success story

What began as a small but powerful idea has now developed into a real model for success. One example of this is the story of Eileen Müller , who attended theMuT project herself years ago and is now actively involved in the event as project manager and STEM role model.she herself first attended the M*uT congress as a participant in 2010, then worked as a student assistant at the Institute of Microproduction Technology after starting a STEM degree course, worked as a scout at the M*uT day and now manages the project.

"As I myself have a personal connection to Girls* and Technology Day, this project is particularly close to my heart. Every year, we hope to inspire schoolgirls for the STEM field and to transfer our enthusiasm for our subject area to the schoolgirls. I am very grateful for everyone who is involved in this day and shares the joy of technology with us."
Eileen Müller, Project Manager M*uT, and research assistant at the Institute of Microproduction Technology at Leibniz Universität Hannover

With the number of female participants steadily increasing - it has even quadrupled in recent years - it is clear that it is no longer just an event, but a genuine movement that not only inspires schoolgirls, but also encourages them to rethink their professional and academic prospects.

A look into the future
